The Mission

To meet the needs of hungry children in our community by providing for them nutritious and easy-to-prepare food to take home on weekends and school vacations when other resources are not available

The Objectives

• Provide nutritious, healthy food to children at-risk of hunger for preparation and consumption at their home
• Distribute food discreetly in easily accessible and safe environments
• Involve additional resources and partners in order to assure sustainability of the program

The Details

• The average cost of a bag of food for the weekend is $4.00 per child
• The cost to sponsor one child for a year of food is $150.00

Positive outcomes in other communities that have similar programs include

• Fewer classroom behavior issues at start of school week because children had meals on the weekend
• Connections between children and the school counselor due to involvement in the program
• A caring community supporting hungry children

Families will receive a letter from the Perham School District giving them the option to participate in the Backpack Program at no charge to the family. Food will be delivered monthly from the food bank in Crookston to be distributed weekly to children in their backpack. The program will begin in the fall of 2009.

Sponsorships will be available by the TWIGS tree. You may also complete the form on the back of this flyer if you are interested in sponsoring a child now. Please place the form in the offering plate or leave it in the office. “Thank you” from hungry children in Perham
